The National Gallery of Canada is world-class and rightly celebrated, but Ottawa has a deeper gallery ecosystem that rewards attention: artist-run centres showing emerging work, commercial galleries with serious programs, and public art commissions that have given the city some of its most distinctive spaces.

Ottawa Art Gallery (OAG)

Now housed in a major building on Daly Avenue near the ByWard Market, the Ottawa Art Gallery is the city's primary public gallery for contemporary and modern art outside the national system. Strong programming focused on Ottawa-area artists and Canadian contemporary work. The gallery anchors First Thursday programming each month. Free admission.

SAW Gallery

One of Canada's oldest artist-run centres, SAW Gallery on Sussex Drive has been showing experimental and challenging work for decades. Not always accessible, but consistently interesting. An important part of Ottawa's visual arts history and present. Free admission.

Karsh-Masson Gallery

Inside Ottawa City Hall, the Karsh-Masson Gallery is a public gallery showing Ottawa-area artists in a civic context. Programming covers a wide range of media and approaches. Named for Yousuf Karsh, the great portrait photographer who worked in Ottawa for decades. Free admission.

Cube Gallery

In Westboro, Cube Gallery has built a reputation for thoughtful programming of contemporary Canadian artists. The space is beautiful and well-lit, and the gallery's taste tends toward accessible-but-serious — work you'd want to live with. Good opening nights.

Gallery 101

Another artist-run centre with a mandate for community-engaged and experimental art. Programming often connects to Ottawa's francophone community and bilingual arts scene. Free admission.

Galerie St-Laurent + Hill

A well-established commercial gallery in Old Ottawa South with a distinguished program of Canadian painting and works on paper. One of the few Ottawa galleries with an international exhibition history.

First Thursdays

The first Thursday of each month, galleries across Ottawa (concentrated in the ByWard Market, New Edinburgh, and Hintonburg areas) open late with free admission, often with artist talks and opening receptions. It's the best single evening to see a wide cross-section of Ottawa's visual arts scene.

Public Art

Ottawa's public art collection is extensive — Elgin Street, the NCC pathway system, and the ByWard Market area all have significant outdoor works. The NCC publishes a public art guide; the stretch along the Ottawa River near the War Museum has some of the most interesting installations.
