Ottawa's cocktail scene grew up fast. A decade ago, options were thin outside of hotel bars. Now the city has a proper range of cocktail destinations — from intimate neighbourhood spots to destination bars that draw visitors from Toronto. Here's where to go.

Bar Laurel

Inside the Alt Hotel near Parliament, Bar Laurel is arguably Ottawa's best cocktail bar — inventive, technically excellent, with a menu that changes seasonally and bartenders who clearly love what they do. The space is sleek without being cold, and the non-alcoholic program is equally thoughtful. Go for a pre-dinner drink and consider staying for the evening.

The Highlander Pub (Whisky Bar)

For something different: The Highlander on Elgin Street has one of the best whisky selections in the city — hundreds of Scotch and bourbon options, a dark and warm atmosphere, and the kind of expertise behind the bar that makes a single malt feel like an education.

Arlo

A relatively recent addition to Ottawa's cocktail scene in Hintonburg, Arlo has quickly become a local favourite for its accessible but creative approach — good drinks, reasonable prices, and a neighbourhood energy that feels genuinely local.

The Laff

A storied Elgin Street bar that's been through various reinventions. In its current form it's one of the better spots on the strip for a proper cocktail alongside a bite to eat. The back patio is a summer highlight.

Fauna

More of a wine bar, but Fauna's natural wine program on Murray Street is paired with a short, thoughtful cocktail and spirits list. The space is small, warm, and beautifully designed. Better for a slower, more intimate evening than a big night out.

Play Food & Wine

The Sommelier's dream in the ByWard Market area, Play has built a reputation as one of the city's finest dining experiences, and the bar program matches. Sophisticated cocktails, exceptional wine, and a commitment to local ingredients that extends through the entire menu.

Oz Kafe

A basement bar in the Market that's been a ByWard institution for years. Comfortable, unpretentious, with a serious cocktail program that doesn't ask you to take it too seriously. One of the best spots for a genuinely relaxed evening with well-made drinks.

Tips

  • Ottawa bar culture tends toward an early last call compared to Toronto or Montréal — plan accordingly
  • The Elgin Street strip and ByWard Market are the two main nightlife corridors
  • Several of Ottawa's best restaurants (Atelier, Play, Beckta) have exceptional bar programs worth visiting even without dinner reservations
