Ottawa's coffee culture is quieter than Toronto's but no less serious. The city has a thriving independent scene anchored by its own homegrown chain, with enough variety that you can find exactly the right place for whatever you need from a café.
Bridgehead
Ottawa's own. Bridgehead started here in 1981 as Canada's first fair-trade coffee importer and grew into the city's signature chain — now with locations across Ottawa, each with a slightly different character. The coffee is consistently excellent, the spaces are comfortable and community-minded, and as a locally owned business they genuinely matter to the city. If you're new to Ottawa and need a reliable home base, start here.
Happy Goat Coffee
Two locations — Gilmour Street in Centretown and a smaller spot on Clarence in ByWard Market — each with an independent, slightly eccentric feel. The espresso is precise and the single-origin filter coffees are rotated thoughtfully. Gilmour Street is particularly good for working: good wifi, comfortable seating, no pressure to leave.
Equator Coffee Roasters
Roasting out of Almonte (a short drive from Ottawa), Equator has brought its beans into the city through a café in Westboro. Third-wave coffee done right — pour-overs, careful extraction, staff who can tell you exactly where your coffee came from. It skews toward the enthusiast end of the spectrum without being pretentious.
Dispatch Coffee
A Hintonburg spot with a serious commitment to the craft side of coffee. Small, focused, and very good. The kind of café where the person behind the bar is also the person who dialled in the espresso recipe that morning.
Feleena's Café
A neighbourhood institution in Old Ottawa South that proves great coffee doesn't need to be precious. Warm, lived-in, full of regulars, and the kind of place that still feels like a discovery even after years of going.
The Roasted Bean
Multiple locations around Ottawa with a more traditional café feel. Good for a quick, reliable coffee without the artisanal premium. Popular with the government crowd on weekday mornings.
Cube Tart
A Glebe café doing solid coffee alongside some of the better baked goods in the neighbourhood. Compact and cheerful, with a good rotation of seasonal drinks.
