Ottawa and the surrounding Ottawa Valley have a strong agricultural tradition and a market culture that reflects it. From the city's historic public market to small-town Saturday morning institutions an hour west, the options are excellent.
ByWard Market (Year-Round)
Canada's oldest continuously operating public market, running since 1826. The outdoor stalls (May–October) are the showpiece — fresh produce, maple products, honey, flowers, and crafts from Ottawa Valley farms. The indoor market building operates year-round with permanent vendors. Come Saturday morning from June through October for the market at its best. The maple syrup and local cheese are essential purchases.
Parkdale Market
Ottawa's quieter, more residential market runs at Parkdale Avenue and Wellington Street West, steps from Hintonburg. Less touristy than ByWard, more focused on serious produce shoppers. Good selection of local vegetables, eggs, and baked goods. The farmers here tend to be smaller-scale operations with more interesting varieties.
Ottawa Farmers Market (Landsdowne Park)
Runs on the grounds of Lansdowne Park year-round (outdoor in summer, Aberdeen Pavilion in winter). Well-organized with consistent vendors, a good mix of prepared food and raw ingredients, and a pleasant Saturday morning energy. The location at Lansdowne makes it easy to combine with a Glebe walk.
Carp Farmers' Market
Drive 35 minutes west of Ottawa to the village of Carp and find one of the best small-town farmers markets in Ontario. Held on Saturdays from late May through October, Carp Market has a genuine country-market character — local produce from Ottawa Valley farms, home preserves, baked goods, and craft vendors who aren't trying to look artisanal, just are. The market is held at the Carp Fairgrounds, and combining it with a drive through the agricultural landscape of the Ottawa Valley is a genuinely lovely Saturday morning.
Almonte Farmers Market
Another excellent Valley market, held in the town of Almonte (45 minutes west). The town itself is worth a visit — a beautifully preserved mill town on the Mississippi River — and the market reflects its community's character.
Seasonal Tips
- The ByWard Market outdoor stalls typically start in May with asparagus and rhubarb; peak season for variety is July–September
- For the best maple syrup: buy from a vendor who's a producer, not a reseller — at Carp or Parkdale you can usually find the farm directly
- Ottawa Valley apple season (September–October) is worth specifically planning a market trip around
- The winter ByWard Market is smaller but active; local producers continue through the season
