Ottawa's music scene often gets overshadowed by Toronto and Montréal, but the city has a genuine live music culture — a mix of historic venues, festival infrastructure, and a government-town audience that shows up reliably for good programming.
National Arts Centre (NAC)
Canada's national performing arts centre sits on Confederation Square in the heart of downtown. The NAC hosts everything from the NAC Orchestra (one of Canada's premier classical ensembles) to major Canadian and international touring acts. The multiple performance spaces — from the large Opera hall to the intimate Fourth Stage — mean there's programming almost every night.
RBC Bluesfest
Every July, Bluesfest transforms LeBreton Flats on the Ottawa River into one of Canada's best music festivals. Ten days of programming across multiple stages, with a lineup that runs from international headliners to Canadian emerging artists. The river location with the Gatineau Hills as a backdrop is genuinely beautiful. Buy tickets early for headliner nights; many stages have free or reduced-price options.
Ottawa Jazz Festival
Held in late June, the Ottawa Jazz Festival programs across multiple venues in the ByWard Market area and on the outdoor stages at Confederation Park. The outdoor programming is free; ticketed shows in club venues are modestly priced. One of the oldest jazz festivals in Canada, with excellent booking.
Ritual (formerly Rainbow Bistro)
Ottawa's home of the blues since 1985. The Rainbow Bistro (now rebranded Ritual) on Murray Street is a small, sweaty, acoustically excellent room that has hosted every major blues act that has come through Ottawa. The calendar is full most weekends.
Pressed
This Centretown bar and restaurant programs live music regularly — folk, jazz, indie — in a comfortable listening-room environment that suits both regulars and first-time visitors. One of the best spots for discovering Ottawa's local music scene.
Irene's Pub
In Old Ottawa South, Irene's has been a neighbourhood music pub for decades. Consistent local and regional bookings, an excellent beer selection, and the warm atmosphere of a properly loved neighbourhood bar.
The Ottawa Folk Festival
Every August in Hog's Back Park, the Ottawa Folk Festival programs a full weekend of folk, roots, and singer-songwriter acts. It's one of the most beautiful festival settings in Canada — a park above the Rideau River with performances from early afternoon through late evening.
National Gallery Performance Space
The National Gallery hosts chamber music concerts and interdisciplinary performance events in its Great Hall and outdoor spaces during summer. Often free with gallery admission or as standalone events.
