Ottawa is quietly one of Canada's best cities for families with children. The combination of nationally funded museums (many with free admission), extraordinary outdoor spaces, and a safe, walkable downtown makes it an easy city to navigate with kids of any age.

Canadian Museum of Nature

Kids lose their minds for the dinosaur galleries. The Natural History museum in Centretown — housed in a gorgeous castle-like building — has excellent hands-on programming, a mineral and gem gallery that earns gasps, and the Blue Whale Discovery room. Admission charged; free Friday evenings.

Canada Science and Technology Museum

Possibly the best museum in Ottawa for interactive, hands-on fun. Climb into a locomotive, transmit morse code, explore space missions, and watch a genuine spark from a Tesla coil. Programming for school ages is excellent. Admission charged; worth it.

Canada Agriculture and Food Museum

This one surprises parents most: a working farm within Ottawa's city limits, with animals, seasonal programming, and demonstrations that connect kids to where food actually comes from. In spring, the baby animals draw enormous crowds. Admission charged.

Rideau Canal Skating (Winter)

When the Canal is open for skating — usually January through February — it's one of the most magical winter experiences in Canada. Seven kilometres of skating through the heart of the city, with Beavertails stands along the route. Skate rentals are available at several locations along the Canal. Check the NCC website for daily ice conditions.

Gatineau Park

For families with older kids or active toddlers: Pink Lake trail is short, visually stunning, and accessible. The Champlain Lookout drive is doable even with non-hikers. In winter, Gatineau Park runs excellent beginner cross-country ski programs.

Carlingwood Park and Area Splash Pads

Ottawa has a network of free splash pads throughout the city that operate May to September. For a full list with locations, the City of Ottawa website maintains an updated map. Strathcona Park near the Rideau River also has a wading pool popular with families.

Winterlude (February)

Ottawa's February festival is built for families. Free ice sculpture gardens in Confederation Park, skating on the Canal, the ice playground at Jacques Cartier Park in Gatineau, and family programming throughout the three weekends. One of the best winter festivals in North America.

Parliament Hill

Older children can book tours of the Centre Block (currently undergoing restoration — check current access). The Changing of the Guard ceremony on the East Lawn in summer is free and runs about 30 minutes. July 1st celebrations are an exceptional family experience.

Ottawa Public Library (Central Branch)

The new Ottawa Central Library — opened recently on Laurier Avenue — is one of the most ambitious public library projects in Canadian history. The children's programming is excellent and completely free.

Practical Tips

  • The Museum Pass provides admission to multiple Ottawa museums at a discounted rate
  • Most museums offer reduced family rates; ask at the door
  • Ottawa summers are hot (genuinely hot, with humidity), so plan outdoor activities for morning
  • Ottawa winters are cold (-20°C is normal), but the infrastructure for winter activities is excellent — dress kids in layers
