Ottawa's vegetarian and vegan scene has developed from a niche into a genuine dining culture. The city now has enough quality options — from fine dining to casual lunch spots — that a plant-based diet is no constraint on eating well.
ZenKitchen
Ottawa's flagship vegetarian restaurant, and one of the best in Canada. ZenKitchen has been doing refined vegetarian cooking since 2007, focusing on local, organic ingredients in creative preparations that treat vegetables as the main event rather than a concession. The weekend tasting menu is one of Ottawa's best dining experiences, plant-based or otherwise. Book ahead.
Pure Kitchen
A fast-casual chain with Ottawa roots that has expanded nationally — their Bank Street and Sparks Street locations are reliable for quick, genuinely good plant-based meals. The grain bowls, wraps, and smoothies are well-executed. Consistent quality across locations.
The Table Vegetarian Restaurant
In the ByWard Market area, The Table is an Ottawa institution for affordable, wholesome vegetarian cooking. The daily specials board reflects seasonal ingredients, and the comfort-food approach (stews, soups, hearty mains) makes it particularly good on a cold Ottawa day.
Art-Is-In Bakery
Not exclusively vegetarian, but the Hintonburg bakery's menu is predominantly plant-forward. The grain bowls, vegetable-focused toasts, and seasonal specials are excellent, and the pastry case is legendary. A reliable choice for a vegetarian breakfast or lunch.
Pressed
This Centretown café and bar has an excellent vegetarian and vegan menu that runs alongside a full drinks program. Thoughtful cooking, accessible prices, and a comfortable space that works for a casual dinner.
Fauna
Fauna's natural wine bar on Murray Street offers small plates that are often vegetable-forward or easily vegetarian-adapted. The quality is high and the atmosphere is excellent. One of Ottawa's better spots for a considered vegetarian evening out.
The Neon Rodeo
A newer, plant-based take on BBQ — Ottawa's most fun vegetarian restaurant. Smoked jackfruit, plant-based brisket, and sides that capture the BBQ comfort-food experience without the meat. Worth it for curiosity alone.
Tips
- Ottawa's restaurant scene has moved significantly toward flexitarian cooking — most good restaurants now have excellent vegetarian options even if they're not specialist shops
- ZenKitchen is the destination for a special occasion; The Table and Pure Kitchen are the workhorses for weekday eating
- The ByWard Market farmers market is excellent for building a vegetarian pantry — local produce, cheese, eggs, and preserved goods
