Sugar Shack Season Is Here: Visiting Proulx Farm in Ottawa's East End
Spring's sweetest tradition is officially underway. Sugar shack season has arrived in Ottawa, and Proulx Farm in Cumberland is one of the best places in the region to experience it properly.
Ottawa Is Not Boring recently visited the farm for its opening weekend — and the verdict is in: it delivered on every front.
The Feast
The classic sugar shack spread at Proulx Farm doesn't cut corners:
🥞 Pancakes drenched in fresh maple syrup 🌭 Sausages and ham 🍳 Scrambled eggs and home fries 🫘 Baked beans — a sugar shack staple 🥐 Freshly baked bread and croissants
Catering is handled by Golly That's Good, a guarantee of quality. For drinks: hot apple cider, hot chocolate, coffee, tea, and cold beverages. For dessert: freshly baked strawberry, raspberry, and blueberry pies — plus the one thing you absolutely can't leave without: taffy poured over snow 🍁
The Farm Experience
Proulx Farm has been operated by the Proulx family since 1920, and the century of tradition shows. After the meal, the farm opens up for:
🐴 Horse-drawn wagon rides with massive animals weighing about a ton each 🐐 Petting farm with goats, lambs, chickens, ducks, and rabbits 🚜 Tractor rides 🔥 Fire pits and picnic areas 🌲 Country trails through the sugar bush 🛝 Outdoor play parks for kids
The century-old Sugar Bush shack is the centrepiece — a genuine piece of Ottawa Valley heritage.
