The World Has Way More Bee Species Than We Knew
Science just gave us a reason to look at the garden a little differently. A new study has found that there are approximately 26,000 unique bee species on Earth, far more than researchers had previously catalogued. Canadian scientists are among those contributing to the research.
The discovery is the result of what researchers are calling a "specialization explosion", a phenomenon where, over millions of years, bees co-evolved alongside flowering plants, each species adapting to increasingly specific niches. That deep, intimate relationship between bees and plants drove extraordinary biodiversity.
Why the Number Is So High
The previous count of bee species was already impressive, but 26,000 represents a significant upward revision. The reason earlier estimates fell short comes down to the sheer difficulty of identifying and cataloguing species, especially smaller, less conspicuous bees that don't build recognizable hives.
Advances in genetic analysis and more systematic global surveys have allowed researchers to identify species that were previously lumped together or simply missed. The more we look, it turns out, the more we find.
Co-Evolution With Flowering Plants
The relationship between bees and flowering plants is one of the most consequential in the natural world. As flowering plants diversified over millions of years, bees followed, adapting their body shapes, tongue lengths, and foraging behaviours to match specific flowers. This mutual specialization is what drove the proliferation of species.
It's a beautiful example of how interconnected life on Earth truly is. Pull one thread, say, the loss of a flowering plant species, and the bee species that depended on it may follow.
Why It Matters
Bees are essential pollinators for roughly a third of the food humans eat. Understanding how many species exist, where they live, and what they depend on is critical for conservation efforts, particularly as climate change and habitat loss threaten pollinator populations worldwide.
