Ottawa's greatest outdoor asset is one that most Canadians don't know about: Gatineau Park, a 361-square-kilometre wilderness park that starts less than 20 minutes from Parliament Hill. Combined with trails along the Ottawa River and the Rideau system, the city offers exceptional hiking that most urban centres can only dream about.

Gatineau Park Trails

Champlain Lookout (Easy–Moderate)

The most popular day hike in the region for good reason. The trail to Champlain Lookout rewards hikers with a panoramic view of the Ottawa Valley and the Ottawa River far below. Multiple trails access the lookout, the Western Pkwy trail is the classic, and the Champlain trail loop gives you more time in the forest. Best in autumn when the colours are extraordinary.

Pink Lake (Easy)

A 2.5km interpretive loop around a meromictic lake (its layers don't mix) with an otherworldly turquoise-green colour. The boardwalk sections make it accessible in almost any weather, and the lake itself is genuinely beautiful. Popular with families and beginners.

King Mountain Trail (Moderate)

A more demanding loop with a rocky summit offering views across the park. Less crowded than Champlain Lookout, more satisfying as a workout. About 6km round trip.

Wolf Trail (Strenuous)

For experienced hikers wanting a full day. The Wolf Trail traverses the highest terrain in the park with multiple viewpoints. Rugged, beautiful, and genuinely wild-feeling despite being close to the city.

Ottawa Trails

Rideau Canal Pathway

Not a wilderness hike, but the Canal's multi-use pathway runs for kilometres through the heart of Ottawa with pleasant scenery and easy access. Perfect for a quick walk or a longer urban ramble.

Ottawa River Pathway

The NCC pathway system along the Ottawa River connects several parks and viewpoints. The stretch from Remic Rapids past the Canadian War Museum and Parliament Hill offers some of the city's best urban walking.

Mer Bleue Bog

A rare sphagnum peat bog in the east end of Ottawa managed by the NCC. The boardwalk trail through the bog is unlike anywhere else in the region, an open, eerie landscape of carnivorous plants, stunted black spruce, and total silence. About 2km on the main boardwalk, with longer loops available.

Seasonal Notes

  • Gatineau Park trails are best in late September–mid October for fall colours
  • Many trails are open for cross-country skiing in winter (the Gatineau Loppet is a world-class event held in February)
  • Spring hiking (April–May) means mud, waterproof boots are essential
  • The NCC website has up-to-date trail conditions and closures
