Ottawa has long had a thriving underground hip-hop scene, but it's never had a festival that truly brought its English and French communities onto the same stage. That's about to change.
Introducing BlokJam: a brand-new bilingual hip-hop festival coming to downtown Ottawa in September 2026, organized by five young creatives from the National Capital Region.
The Team Behind It
Julien Fontaine-Carbonneau, Scarlet Torraka, Jacob McGuire, Frédéric Doiron, and Breanna Smith are the brains behind the project, all deeply embedded in Ottawa's local arts scene. Their vision is straightforward but ambitious: build a platform that celebrates all four pillars of hip-hop (rap, DJing, breakdancing, and graffiti art) while reflecting Ottawa's bilingual identity.
How It Works
BlokJam runs in two phases on the same day. During the day, it's a free, family-friendly block party with DJ showcases and dance competitions, the kind of event you can bring your kids to without hesitation. As the sun goes down, the vibe shifts into a full concert experience, with $20 tickets giving you access to an immersive night of local and regional talent.
It's a smart structure: the daytime portion introduces new audiences to the scene, while the evening rewards dedicated fans.
Why Ottawa, Why Now
Organizer Frédéric Doiron says the festival is designed to spotlight local artists who rarely get the recognition they deserve. "Bring [local] artists to light and eventually help them grow their community while putting Ottawa on the map," he said.
Ottawa sits at a unique cultural crossroads, bilingual, diverse, underrated in the Canadian music conversation. BlokJam is a bet that the city's hip-hop community is ready for its moment.
