A new weapon against ticks
Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia has landed $1.2 million in funding to set up a research lab dedicated to developing new tick repellents, a project that could have ripple effects for Canadians well beyond the Maritimes.
Ticks have been creeping into new territory across the country for years, and with that spread comes a rise in tick-borne illnesses like Lyme disease. The new lab will focus on three core questions: what species of ticks are actually present in Nova Scotia, what pathogens those ticks are carrying, and how effectively different repellent compounds hold up against them.
Why this matters nationally
While the research is based in Nova Scotia, tick populations don't respect provincial borders. Warmer winters and shifting climate patterns have been pushing tick habitats further north and west across Canada, meaning findings from this lab could inform how public health agencies and repellent manufacturers approach the problem country-wide.
Understanding which pathogens local tick populations carry is especially important. Not every tick bite carries the same risk, and building a clearer picture of what's circulating in different regions helps doctors, researchers and everyday Canadians better assess exposure and treatment.
What the lab will actually do
Researchers at Acadia will spend the funding on fieldwork to catalogue tick species in the province, lab testing to identify pathogens those ticks carry, and controlled trials to see how ticks respond to various repellent formulations. That last piece is key: many repellents on the market today were developed and tested against tick populations in other parts of the world, and what works well against a European or American tick species doesn't always translate directly to the ones showing up in Canadian backyards and hiking trails.
The goal is repellents that are actually effective against the ticks Canadians are most likely to encounter, rather than relying on generic formulations.
A growing public health concern
Lyme disease cases have been climbing across Canada over the past decade, with public health units in multiple provinces flagging an expanding risk zone. Research like this feeds directly into that broader effort: better repellents mean fewer bites, and better pathogen tracking means faster, more accurate responses when bites do happen.
For now, the standard advice still applies for anyone heading outdoors this season, wear light-coloured clothing, tuck pants into socks, check thoroughly for ticks after time in grassy or wooded areas, and use a repellent registered with Health Canada. But with a dedicated Canadian research lab now digging into the specifics, the tools available to fight back against ticks could look a lot more targeted in the years ahead.
