Canada's telecommunications infrastructure faced another reminder of its physical vulnerabilities after Bell confirmed that stolen copper wire was responsible for a significant internet outage affecting customers across parts of New Brunswick.
The incident, reported by MobileSyrup on March 17, follows a pattern of copper theft that has been plaguing Canadian telecom providers and utilities for years. As scrap metal prices remain elevated, thieves have repeatedly targeted copper cabling from network installations, causing service disruptions that can affect thousands of customers and take days to repair.
What Happened
Bell identified the root cause of the outage as the theft of copper from their infrastructure in New Brunswick. Copper wire is a core component of legacy telecommunications networks. It carries signals for landline phone service, older DSL internet connections, and the physical plant that underpins much of the network even as it transitions to fibre.
When copper is stolen from a telecommunications installation, the impact can ripple across a wide geographic area. A single theft site can interrupt service for multiple neighbourhoods or towns depending on how the network is structured.
A Growing Problem for Canadian Telecoms
Copper theft from telecommunications and electrical infrastructure is a persistent and costly problem across Canada. The theft is appealing to criminals because copper is valuable, relatively easy to transport, and can be sold at scrap metal dealers, though many provinces have tightened regulations around scrap metal purchases in an attempt to make stolen copper harder to offload.
Telecom companies have invested in anti-theft measures including GPS tracking on infrastructure, covert marking of cables, and working with law enforcement on tip lines. Bell and other Canadian carriers have been actively expanding their fibre networks, particularly in urban and suburban areas. But the transition is expensive and takes years to complete, and rural areas, which are often already underserved, are typically the last to see fibre investment. That means rural New Brunswickers and others in similar situations remain vulnerable to exactly this kind of disruption.
