A new world record, built by students

A team of university students in Ontario has pulled off something no amateur rocketry group has ever done before. The Waterloo Rocketry team launched their liquid bipropellant rocket, Polaris, to an apogee of 19,354 metres, setting a new world record for the highest altitude achieved by an amateur liquid propellant rocket.

Team lead Alex Pacheco walked CBC's The National through the moment the rocket broke the record, describing the launch as the culmination of years of design work, testing and setbacks that are common in student engineering projects working with rocket propulsion.

Why liquid propellant matters

Most amateur and even many small scale rocketry projects rely on solid propellant motors because they are simpler to build and safer to handle. Liquid bipropellant systems, which combine a liquid fuel and a liquid oxidizer, are far more complex. They require intricate plumbing, valves and ignition systems that have to work perfectly under extreme pressure and temperature. Getting a liquid bipropellant rocket built by students to fly at all is an achievement. Getting it to nearly 20 kilometres in altitude, well into the stratosphere, puts Waterloo Rocketry in rare company typically associated with well funded aerospace companies rather than a student club.

A milestone for Canadian engineering talent

Waterloo Rocketry is based out of the University of Waterloo, one of Canada's top engineering schools and a hub for hands on, project based learning. The team is made up of undergraduate students who design, build and test their rockets largely outside of formal coursework, often on their own time and with their own fundraising efforts.

This record adds to Waterloo's growing reputation as a launchpad, literally and figuratively, for Canadian engineering and aerospace talent. The University of Waterloo has long been known for co-op programs that place students directly into industry, and student teams like this one give engineers real world experience building complex systems long before they graduate.

What this means going forward

Breaking a world record is rarely the end of the story for a team like this. Student rocketry groups typically use each launch as a stepping stone, refining designs, testing new components and pushing toward even more ambitious goals. For Waterloo Rocketry, this success with Polaris could open doors to bigger sponsorships, expanded testing facilities and greater recognition on the international amateur rocketry circuit, where competitions and record attempts draw teams from around the world.

It is also a reminder of the level of talent coming out of Ontario's universities. While much attention tends to focus on tech and software achievements in Canada's engineering programs, this record shows that hardware focused disciplines like aerospace engineering are thriving too, driven by student passion projects that rival professional efforts.

As Pacheco and the rest of the Waterloo Rocketry team look ahead, this record breaking flight will likely serve as a benchmark rather than a finish line, with even higher altitudes potentially in their sights for future launches.
