With spring just around the corner in Ottawa, cyclists are dusting off their bikes and getting ready to hit the city's extensive network of paths and roads. But before you clip in and roll out, there's one safety essential you shouldn't skip: making sure your helmet actually fits.
Why Helmet Fit Matters
A helmet that doesn't fit properly offers significantly reduced protection in a crash. According to cycling safety experts consulted by CBC Ottawa, many cyclists are riding with helmets that are either too old, too loose, or positioned incorrectly, all of which compromise safety.
The good news: getting a proper fit is easy and takes just a few minutes.
How to Check Your Helmet Fit
The two-finger rule for the front: Your helmet should sit about two finger-widths above your eyebrows. If it's pushed back on your head, it won't protect your forehead.
The Y-fit for straps: The straps should form a Y shape just below your ears. Adjust the side straps until they sit snugly under your earlobes.
The chin strap: You should only be able to fit one or two fingers between the strap and your chin. If you can pull the helmet off your head, the straps are too loose.
The shake test: Once buckled, shake your head side to side and up and down. The helmet should move with your head, not shift around independently.
When to Replace Your Helmet
Experts recommend replacing your helmet every five years, and immediately after any significant impact, even if the helmet looks undamaged. The foam inside compresses on impact and won't protect you the same way a second time.
Ottawa's Cycling Infrastructure
Ottawa has more than 900 kilometres of cycling paths and lanes, including the scenic Rideau Canal pathway and the Ottawa River multi-use trail. With the city's cycling season typically running from April through November, there's a lot of riding to be done.
