Iran Sets Terms for World Cup Participation

Iran's football federation has handed FIFA a list of 10 conditions it says must be met before the country agrees to participate in the 2026 World Cup hosted across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

The Iranian Football Federation (FFIRI) delivered the demands directly to football's global governing body, raising the possibility that one of Asia's strongest football nations could sit out the tournament. While FIFA has not publicly disclosed the full list of conditions, reports indicate the demands center on security and legal guarantees for Iranian players, officials, and fans travelling to North America.

What Iran Wants

At the heart of the FFIRI's concerns are fears about how Iranian nationals — particularly players and team staff — might be treated upon entering the United States, given the state of relations between the two countries. Iran and the US have no diplomatic ties, and Iranian citizens have faced travel restrictions and scrutiny at American borders for years.

Among the reported conditions are assurances that Iranian team members will not be detained, questioned about politics, or subjected to discriminatory entry procedures. The federation is also believed to be seeking protections for Iranian supporters who wish to attend matches.

With Canada and Mexico also co-hosting the tournament, some Iranian group stage matches could theoretically be played outside the US — but the knockout rounds, including the final, are all scheduled for American venues.

A Tournament With High Political Stakes

Iran's national team, known as Team Melli, qualified for the 2026 World Cup and is expected to be a contender in the Asian Football Confederation bracket. The team made headlines at the 2022 Qatar World Cup, where players refused to sing the national anthem in their opening match in a show of solidarity with anti-government protests back home.

The political dimension of Iranian football has only grown since then, making the team's participation in a US-hosted tournament especially fraught.

FIFA, for its part, has previously faced pressure over hosting decisions and the treatment of players from politically sensitive nations. The governing body has indicated it is in dialogue with the FFIRI but has not confirmed whether any conditions have been accepted.

Canada's Role in the Tournament

Canada is set to host group stage matches at BC Place in Vancouver and BMO Field in Toronto, with the country's own national team also having qualified for the tournament. For Canadian fans, the possibility of Iran's withdrawal would remove a competitive Asian side from the field and could affect group stage dynamics depending on the draw.

The 2026 World Cup kicks off in June of that year, meaning FIFA and the FFIRI have a narrow window to resolve the standoff. Whether Iran ultimately participates will likely depend on diplomatic back-channels as much as football administration.

For now, the situation remains unresolved — and the prospect of one of Asia's top footballing nations missing the biggest sporting event in the world looms as a genuine possibility.
