Kanata has become Ottawa's most desirable suburb for a reason. It combines excellent schools, proximity to one of Canada's biggest tech employment clusters, abundant green space, and a real sense of community — all wrapped in a neighbourhood where a detached home is still (just barely) within reach for dual-income families. Here's what you need to know.

Who Lives Here

Kanata skews young-family and tech-professional. The presence of Kanata North Tech Park — home to over 1,000 companies including Ericsson, QNX/BlackBerry, Nokia, and Ciena — means many residents work within a 10-minute drive or even walking/cycling distance from home. This proximity shapes the neighbourhood's culture: it's busy, educated, and community-minded.

The population is also notably diverse, driven by the tech sector's international workforce. You'll find strong South Asian, East Asian, and newcomer communities throughout Kanata, which is reflected in the food options, community events, and school demographics.

Schools

Kanata's schools are genuinely strong, and this is one of the primary reasons families choose the neighbourhood.

On the public side, Earl of March Secondary School has a strong academic reputation and competitive sports programs. A.Y. Jackson Elementary and John McCrae Secondary also serve parts of the neighbourhood. The Ottawa Carleton District School Board schools in Kanata consistently perform above district averages.

Catholic school families are served by the Ottawa Catholic School Board, which operates several well-regarded schools in the area.

Sub-Communities

Kanata isn't monolithic — it's a collection of distinct sub-communities, each with its own character:

  • Beaverbrook: One of the oldest parts of Kanata, with mature trees, established street networks, and a slightly more affordable entry point
  • Bridlewood: Family-oriented, well-serviced, close to the Centrum
  • Kanata Lakes: Premium, backing onto the golf course and pond system — higher price points, newer builds
  • Morgan's Grant: Newer, well-planned, increasingly popular with young families

Getting Around

Kanata is a car-dependent neighbourhood — there's no getting around it. The 417 provides fast access downtown in off-peak hours (20 minutes), but rush-hour westbound traffic can stretch that to 40-50 minutes. OC Transpo provides regular bus service via Terry Fox Station (a transit hub), and cycling infrastructure has improved significantly along key corridors.

Community Life

Kanata's community leagues, hockey associations, and soccer clubs are among the most active in Ottawa. If you have kids who play sports, you'll find yourself embedded in a warm, well-organized community almost immediately.
