Kanata is one of those places where you can be in a meeting room in a tech park at 9am and walking through a boreal forest by noon. The neighbourhood's proximity to the Ottawa Greenbelt and its network of well-maintained trails make it a genuine outdoor destination for all four seasons.

The Beaver Pond Trail

The Beaver Pond Trail is Kanata's crown jewel. Located within the NCC Greenbelt, this 4.3-kilometre loop winds through wetlands and second-growth forest, passing an active beaver pond that is one of the most reliably scenic spots in the entire Ottawa region.

In winter, the trail is groomed for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. In spring, the beaver pond comes alive with waterfowl — wood ducks, great blue herons, and the occasional muskrat making an appearance. The fall colours here rival anything you'll find in the Gatineau Hills. Park at the trailhead on Moodie Drive.

Shirley's Bay

Shirley's Bay sits at the western edge of the NCC Greenbelt and is one of Ottawa's best-kept birdwatching secrets. The bay and adjacent marshes attract migrating shorebirds in spring and fall, and the NCC-managed trails along the Ottawa River offer stunning views and a genuine sense of wilderness.

This is not a manicured park — it's a working natural area and feels like it. Pack appropriately, stick to the marked trails, and you'll be rewarded.

Walter Baker Sports Centre and Adjacent Green Space

The Walter Baker Sports Centre anchors one of Kanata's main recreation hubs, and the green space around it is well-used by families and athletes year-round. The adjacent outdoor soccer fields host leagues from spring through fall, and there's enough open lawn for frisbee, casual cricket, and general suburban recreation.

Kanata Lakes Community Parks

The Kanata Lakes sub-community has done an excellent job integrating green space into its residential fabric. The neighbourhood's pond system and connecting pathways make for pleasant evening walks, and the parks are consistently well-maintained. The duck pond near Old Second Line Road is a particular favourite with families.

Winter: Cross-Country Skiing at Kanata Golf and Country Club

During Ottawa winters, the Kanata Golf and Country Club grooms its fairways for cross-country skiing — one of the most accessible XC options in the west end. Combined with the Beaver Pond Trail and the NCC Greenbelt network, Kanata skiers have a genuinely impressive network at their disposal.
