A River Walk Worth Taking
If you haven't walked Kichi Zibi Mikan yet, it's time to add it to your Ottawa to-do list. This beautiful multi-use pathway hugs the Ottawa River just 1.5 kilometres from Parliament Hill, which means you get stunning natural scenery without travelling far from the heart of the city.
The trail starts right behind the Canadian War Museum and stretches all the way to Dominion Station, offering a seamless route through some of the city's most scenic landscapes. On a clear day, you can even spot the Peace Tower in the distance, one of those Ottawa views that never gets old.
Something for Every Season
What makes Kichi Zibi Mikan special is its year-round versatility. In the warmer months, it is a favourite for cyclists, joggers, and walkers looking to escape the downtown bustle without actually leaving the city. During winter, the NCC grooms sections of the trail for cross-country skiing, skate skiing, snowshoeing, fat biking, and more.
Highlights Along the Way
A few things to watch for as you walk or ski:
- William Commanda Bridge: A former railway bridge transformed into a pedestrian and cycling crossing over the Ottawa River, with spectacular views up and down the water.
- Remic Rapids rock sculptures: Local artist John Ceprano's impressive stone sculptures are nestled along the riverbank, changing with the seasons.
- NCC Bistro: Open during the summer months for a mid-trail snack or drink.
- Westboro Beach: At the far end of the trail, a beloved local spot in summer for swimming and beach volleyball.
How to Get There
The trail is accessible from multiple entry points, but starting near the Canadian War Museum (1 Vimy Place) is a popular choice. Transit is easy with nearby stops, and there is also parking in the area.
Whether you are a longtime Ottawan or a newcomer still finding your way around, Kichi Zibi Mikan is one of those paths that reminds you why Ottawa is quietly one of the best cities in Canada for outdoor living.
