Ottawa's LRT East Extension Hits Major Milestone, Line 1 Closer to Expansion

Good news for Ottawa transit riders: the Stage 2 east LRT extension has reached "substantial completion," a key construction milestone that moves the project closer to opening, OC Transpo announced Thursday.

The east extension of Line 1 will bring rapid transit further into Ottawa's east end, adding new stations and giving more residents a faster commute into the downtown core.

What 'Substantial Completion' Means

In construction terms, substantial completion means the project has reached a point where it can be used for its intended purpose, even if some finishing work remains. For the LRT extension, hitting this milestone is a significant signal that testing, commissioning, and the path to actual passenger service are now within reach.

OC Transpo has had a rocky history with the LRT system since the troubled opening of Line 1 in 2019, which was plagued by derailments and service interruptions. The Stage 2 extensions, east, west, and south, have been among the most closely watched infrastructure projects in the city.
