In a deal that's turning heads across the tech industry, Meta has signed an agreement to secure millions of Amazon's custom-built AI CPUs for use in agentic AI workloads — the kind of always-on, task-executing AI systems that are rapidly becoming central to how big tech operates.

The agreement is notable not just for its scale, but for what it represents: a deliberate bet on CPUs over the GPUs that have dominated AI infrastructure conversations for the past several years.

Why CPUs, Not GPUs?

For the better part of the AI boom, graphics processing units — led by Nvidia's H100 and successor chips — have been the undisputed workhorses of machine learning. Training large models and running inference at scale has largely been a GPU story.

But agentic AI workloads are different. These are systems that don't just respond to a prompt — they plan, execute multi-step tasks, call tools, and operate autonomously over longer periods. The computational profile of agentic tasks is less about raw parallel processing power and more about efficient, sustained throughput across many concurrent lightweight operations.

That's where Amazon's custom-built CPUs — part of its in-house silicon program that includes chips like Graviton and the AI-focused Trainium and Inferentia lines — come into play. These chips are designed to deliver strong performance-per-watt for sustained workloads, making them well-suited to the kind of continuous, lower-intensity compute that agentic AI demands.

A New Kind of Chip Race

Meta's move is being read by analysts as an early signal of a broader realignment in AI infrastructure. As the industry pivots from model training (a GPU-heavy task done in bursts) toward model deployment and agentic operation (a CPU-friendly task done continuously), demand patterns for silicon are changing fast.

For Amazon, landing Meta as a customer for its homegrown chips is a major validation of its multi-year investment in custom silicon. Amazon Web Services has been quietly building out its own chip capabilities as an alternative to buying Nvidia hardware — reducing dependency on a single supplier while also improving margins.

For Meta, the deal reflects the company's growing appetite for custom and alternative silicon. Meta has already invested heavily in its own AI Research SuperCluster and has been experimenting with a range of chips to reduce its reliance on Nvidia.

What This Means for the Broader Industry

The Meta-Amazon deal is likely a preview of deals to come. As more companies build out agentic AI pipelines — AI systems that browse the web, write code, manage schedules, and interact with external services — the demand for efficient, scalable CPU infrastructure will only grow.

Nvidia remains dominant for training and heavy inference, but the emerging agentic layer of the AI stack may ultimately belong to a more diverse set of chip architectures. Intel, AMD, Arm-based designs, and custom silicon from cloud giants are all positioning for a piece of this market.

The chip race for AI, it turns out, has more than one finish line.
