Scientists are bringing cutting-edge technology to one of nature's most spectacular events: the monarch butterfly migration. A total of 160 monarchs across Mexico's six butterfly sanctuaries have been fitted with tiny new transmitters that will, for the first time, provide a detailed look at the initial stages of the insects' annual migration back north.
And here's where it gets interesting for the rest of us: smartphones are being enlisted as part of the data collection effort, meaning citizen scientists can contribute to the research from their own backyards.
Why the Migration Is Still Mysterious
The monarch butterfly migration is one of the most remarkable biological phenomena on Earth. Every year, millions of monarchs make a multi-generational journey spanning thousands of kilometres between their overwintering sites in Mexico and their summer breeding grounds in Canada and the northern United States.
Despite decades of research, significant aspects of how monarchs navigate, choose routes, and time their migration remain poorly understood. The new transmitter technology, combined with continent-wide data collection, aims to fill in those gaps.
How the Technology Works
The transmitters attached to the monarchs are small enough not to affect flight but sophisticated enough to emit trackable signals. Ground-based and aerial receivers, combined with smartphone apps that allow citizen scientists to log butterfly sightings, create a distributed tracking network that covers far more territory than any research team could alone.
Why This Matters for Canada
Monarchs spend their summers across Canada, including in Ontario. The population has been in decline for decades, driven by habitat loss (particularly milkweed, their essential food and egg-laying plant), pesticide use, and climate change disrupting migration timing.
Better understanding of their migration patterns will inform conservation efforts that could help stabilize and eventually rebuild monarch populations in Canada.
