One of the most overlooked facts about Orléans is just how much green space it has. For a suburb of 120,000+, it punches hard on the outdoor front — from an actual sandy beach on the Ottawa River to multi-use trail networks connecting its sprawling subdivisions. Here's where to get outside.

Petrie Island Beach

The crown jewel. Petrie Island sits at the eastern tip of Ottawa where the Rideau River meets the Ottawa River, and it offers something genuinely rare in a major Canadian city: a real beach. Fine sand, calm water, designated swimming areas, and paddleboard/kayak rentals make it a legitimate summer destination. The trails around the island are excellent for birding — great blue herons and ospreys are regulars. In spring and fall, the migratory waterfowl stopover here is something else entirely.

The beach gets crowded on hot weekends. Arrive before 10am or accept the parking scramble.

Trim Road and the Ottawa River Pathway

The Ottawa River Pathway extends through the Orléans waterfront, offering flat, paved cycling and walking paths with views across to Gatineau. The Trim Road area connects to the new LRT station and has seen investment in trail infrastructure — it's a legitimately pleasant evening walk in summer.

Ray Friel Recreation Complex Surroundings

The Ray Friel Recreation Complex anchors a green corridor that includes fields, a skate park, and connected walking paths. It's a hub for youth sports leagues and a de facto gathering spot for families in the Avalon and Summerside communities.

Millennium Sports Park

One of the larger multi-use outdoor sports parks in Ottawa's east end, Millennium Sports Park on Mer Bleue Road hosts soccer, baseball, and community events year-round. The adjacent pond and trail loop make for a nice 3–4km walk at any time of year.

Mer Bleue Conservation Area (Next Door)

Technically not in Orléans proper, but practically speaking, Mer Bleue Bog — a National Capital Commission conservation area — is minutes from most Orléans addresses. The boardwalk trail over the peat bog is one of Ottawa's most unusual outdoor experiences: a rare raised bog ecosystem, home to carnivorous plants, that feels genuinely wild despite being a 10-minute drive from a Walmart. Don't sleep on it.

Winter

In winter, local parks convert to skating rinks, and the NCC maintains skating trails near the riverfront. Cross-country skiing access via Mer Bleue adds another dimension.

The Takeaway

Orléans residents know they have the best of both worlds: urban access and genuine nature. The outdoor infrastructure is one of the neighbourhood's most compelling arguments for living (and visiting) the east end.
