Ottawa Blue Jays fans, this one's for you. Kevin Gausman, one of the best free-agent pickups in Toronto Blue Jays history, says he wants to spend the rest of his playing career in a Jays uniform.
The 35-year-old right-hander is heading into the final year of his five-year, $110 million contract, and there had been quiet chatter over the offseason that retirement might be on his mind. But in a candid interview with Foul Territory, Gausman made his feelings about Toronto, and the organization, crystal clear.
'I Love This City'
"I would love to continue to play for the Blue Jays. I love this organization, I love this city," Gausman said. "For me being here as long as I have, it's been cool to see the organization grow. See [John Schneider] grow as a manager. My kids have grown [up] in Toronto. There's a lot of things to like."
Those are warm words from a pitcher who has genuinely delivered the goods. In 2025, Gausman posted a 3.59 ERA across 193 innings, numbers that show he still has plenty left in the tank at 35. He's a two-time MLB All-Star, and frankly, one of the steadiest arms the Jays have had in the rotation for years.
The Business of Baseball
Gausman was careful to temper expectations, though. Extension talks haven't started yet, and he acknowledged the reality of professional sports.
"I also understand it's a business," he said. "It's not always about what everybody wants. Sometimes it just goes back to what makes sense for both sides. We'll see what happens."
It's a grounded take from a veteran player, one who clearly loves his situation but understands contracts involve two parties.
What It Means for Ottawa Fans
For the thousands of Blue Jays fans in Ottawa and the surrounding region, Gausman's comments are a genuinely encouraging sign heading into the 2026 season.
