Tragedy on the Upper Rideau
A 24-year-old man from Brampton, Ontario has died after his canoe capsized on Upper Rideau Lake near Smiths Falls — a waterway that draws Ottawa-area paddlers and cottagers every summer season. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) confirmed the drowning, marking a sobering start to what is typically one of the busiest times of year on the region's lakes and rivers.
The victim has not been publicly identified. According to OPP, the canoe overturned on Upper Rideau Lake, part of the historic Rideau Waterway system that stretches from Kingston to Ottawa. Emergency responders were called to the scene, but the man could not be saved.
A Familiar and Beloved Waterway
The Rideau system is one of the most popular recreational corridors in Eastern Ontario, attracting thousands of paddlers, boaters, and swimmers from Ottawa and surrounding communities each summer. Upper Rideau Lake sits about 90 kilometres southwest of Ottawa, near the town of Smiths Falls — a gateway destination for many capital-region residents heading into cottage country.
The lake's calm appearance can be deceiving. Water temperatures remain dangerously cold well into spring and early summer, and even experienced paddlers can find themselves in trouble if a canoe or kayak overturns unexpectedly.
Water Safety Reminders
The OPP use tragedies like this to reinforce the basics of water safety — reminders that may feel repetitive but could save lives:
- Always wear a life jacket (PFD) — it won't help if it's sitting in the canoe instead of on your body
- Tell someone your plan — where you're going and when you expect to be back
- Check the weather before heading out; wind and waves can change quickly
- Avoid paddling alone, especially in unfamiliar water
- Cold water shock can incapacitate even strong swimmers within minutes
According to the Lifesaving Society, drowning is one of the leading causes of accidental death in Canada during the summer months. A significant number of victims are not wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident.
A Reminder for Ottawa-Area Paddlers
With summer officially around the corner, Ottawa residents are gearing up for another season of paddling on the Rideau River, the Ottawa River, and the many lakes accessible within an hour or two of the city. The Ottawa River alone sees hundreds of kayakers and canoeists on any given summer weekend — and the region's parks and conservation areas offer no shortage of launch points.
Local outfitters and paddling clubs regularly offer safety courses for beginners and those looking to brush up on skills. If you're new to canoeing or heading out on unfamiliar water this season, it's worth taking a course before launching.
