Ottawa is mourning after a devastating fire tore through a Centretown high-rise late Saturday night, leaving two people dead and three others injured, including one in critical condition.
What Happened
The fire broke out at 395 Somerset Street West, a residential high-rise in the heart of Centretown, around 9:30 PM on Saturday. Emergency services received multiple 911 calls reporting heavy smoke and flames billowing from the building, with at least one person reportedly trapped on a balcony.
Ottawa Fire Services responded quickly, deploying multiple units to the scene. Firefighters made their way up to the 19th floor, where the blaze was centred, and performed a number of rescues, including pulling three residents out unconscious.
The Toll
Despite the heroic efforts of first responders, the outcome was heartbreaking. One person was pronounced dead at the scene. A second victim was transported to hospital but later succumbed to their injuries. Two other residents were taken to hospital, with one reported to be in critical condition. A third injured person was also treated at the scene.
Fire crews were ultimately able to contain the blaze to the unit of origin, preventing it from spreading to other floors, a small measure of relief in an otherwise tragic night for the building's residents.
E-Bike Under Investigation
Authorities are now examining an e-bike found in the apartment as a possible cause of the fire. E-bike battery fires have become an increasingly serious concern in cities across Canada and around the world. Lithium-ion batteries, when they fail or overheat, can ignite rapidly and burn at extremely high temperatures, making them especially dangerous in apartment settings where escape routes may be limited.
The investigation remains ongoing, and officials have not yet confirmed the cause.

For residents of 395 Somerset and the broader Centretown community, Saturday night was a stark reminder of how quickly a fire can turn catastrophic in a high-rise building. The tragedy underscores the importance of fire safety awareness, including proper storage of e-bikes and their batteries, many safety experts recommend against charging them overnight or in enclosed spaces.
