Ottawa Shoppers: Check Your Fridge Now
Ottawa residents are being urged to check their refrigerators after the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced a series of food recalls affecting salads, cheeses, and meal kits due to potential listeria contamination.
Listeria monocytogenes is a serious foodborne bacteria that can cause listeriosis — an illness particularly dangerous for pregnant women, the elderly, newborns, and anyone with a weakened immune system. Symptoms can include fever, muscle aches, nausea, and in severe cases, the infection can spread to the nervous system.
What Products Are Affected?
The CFIA recall covers a range of ready-to-eat items that are commonly stocked in Ottawa grocery stores, including packaged salads, specialty cheeses, and pre-assembled meal kits. These types of products are popular among busy Ottawa households looking for convenient meal options — which makes this recall especially important to pay attention to.
The CFIA has not limited the recall to a single brand or retailer, meaning the affected items may have been sold at multiple grocery chains across the National Capital Region.
What Should You Do?
If you've recently purchased any packaged salads, soft or specialty cheeses, or meal kits, the CFIA recommends the following steps:
- Check the CFIA website for the full list of recalled products, including brand names, lot numbers, and best-before dates
- Do not consume any products matching the recall descriptions
- Throw them out or return them to the store where they were purchased for a full refund
- Clean and sanitize any surfaces or containers that may have come into contact with the recalled products
Listeria: A Serious but Preventable Risk
Listeria is particularly tricky because it can survive — and even thrive — at refrigerator temperatures, unlike many other foodborne pathogens. That means a product can look and smell perfectly fine while still posing a health risk.
The good news is that once a contaminated product is removed from circulation and your home, the risk drops significantly. Cooking foods to proper temperatures also kills listeria, but many of the recalled products are meant to be eaten cold or raw, which is why the recalls are being taken seriously.
