Ottawa Charge's Playoff Run Hits a Wall in Game 2
Ottawa hockey fans had their hearts in their throats Monday night as the Ottawa Charge dropped a painful overtime decision to the Montreal Victoire in Game 2 of their PWHL playoff series — and it was a single, perfectly timed play that sealed the Charge's fate.
With the game still up for grabs in overtime, five Ottawa Charge players found themselves chasing play toward the side boards, leaving the slot dangerously exposed. Maggie Flaherty saw the opening immediately and made a decisive move, cutting hard toward the middle of the ice and screaming for superstar Marie-Philip Poulin to find her with the puck.
Poulin — one of the most decorated players in women's hockey history — obliged. Flaherty buried it. Game over.
A Costly Defensive Breakdown
The sequence was a painful reminder of how quickly PWHL playoff hockey can turn. The Charge were right in the thick of it until that moment, and five skaters surging toward the boards — perhaps anticipating a puck battle along the wall — left the slot unattended at exactly the wrong time.
Flaherty's goal wasn't luck. It was the kind of heads-up read that separates playoff performers from the rest: identify the breakdown, exploit it before the defence recovers, and finish under pressure. She did all three.
With the loss, Montreal now holds a 2–0 series lead and is firmly in control of the matchup heading back to their home ice.
What It Means for the Charge
Down two games in the series, the Ottawa Charge face a steep climb. No team wants to be in a must-win situation this deep into the playoffs, but Ottawa's roster has shown all season that it can compete with the best in the PWHL. The challenge now is doing it consecutively, on the road, with their backs against the wall.
Ottawa fans have rallied hard behind their Charge all season — the team has helped build real buzz around professional women's hockey in the capital. A comeback from 2–0 down would be historic, but this group has the talent to make things interesting.
Game 3 shifts the pressure squarely onto Ottawa's shoulders. The Charge will need tighter defensive coverage, sharper reads in overtime situations, and someone to answer Flaherty's heroics with some of their own.
Eyes on the Series
Poulin continues to be the gravitational centre of the Victoire offence — her ability to find cutting players in the slot with pinpoint passes is a matchup problem the Charge coaching staff will need to solve quickly. If Ottawa can neutralize her playmaking in Game 3, they may be able to claw back into this series.
For now, though, Montreal is firmly in the driver's seat — and Flaherty's overtime winner will be a highlight reel staple for years to come.
