Tragedy at Hogs Back Falls
Ottawa Police are investigating a heartbreaking incident after a six-year-old child was found in the Rideau River near Hogs Back Falls late Thursday afternoon and was pronounced dead.
The Ottawa Police Service confirmed the discovery but have released limited details as the investigation remains in its early stages. Authorities have not yet disclosed the circumstances that led to the child being in the water.
A Beloved Ottawa Landmark
Hogs Back Falls is one of Ottawa's most recognizable natural landmarks — a popular destination for families, joggers, and cyclists year-round. Located along Colonel By Drive in the city's south end, the area sits at the convergence of the Rideau River and the Rideau Canal, just a short distance from Mooney's Bay Park and Carleton University.
The falls themselves are a dramatic natural feature where the Rideau River drops roughly five metres over exposed limestone bedrock. While scenic, the area is also known for its powerful currents and rocky shores, particularly during the spring and early summer when water levels and flow rates are elevated following snowmelt.
Investigation Ongoing
Ottawa Police have not yet identified the child or released details about how they came to be in the river. It is unclear at this time whether family members were present or whether bystanders or emergency services made the initial discovery.
Emergency response teams, including Ottawa Paramedics and Ottawa Fire Services, attended the scene. Despite their efforts, the child could not be saved.
The Office of the Chief Coroner of Ontario will be involved in determining the cause and manner of death, as is standard procedure in cases involving children.
Community in Mourning
News of the child's death has prompted an outpouring of grief from Ottawa residents on social media, with many offering condolences to the family. Local community groups near the Hogs Back area have also expressed their sorrow.
