Ottawa Councillor Takes a Spill — But Not Out of the Race

Ottawa city councillor Jeff Leiper had an unexpected detour on his way to city hall this week — a trip to the hospital after what his spokesperson described as a "gnarly" scooter crash.

Leiper, who represents the Kitchissippi ward and is currently running for mayor of Ottawa, was involved in the crash but thankfully avoided serious injury. "He's sore and a little bruised," his spokesperson confirmed, adding that the councillor is continuing his mayoral campaign without interruption.

What Happened

Details of the crash remain limited, but the description — "gnarly" — suggests it was more than a minor fender-bender on two wheels. Leiper was taken to hospital as a precaution, a standard step after any collision that could involve head or spinal injury, even when the rider feels okay at the scene.

He has since been released and is reportedly back to his regular schedule, which includes the demands of both his council duties and an active mayoral campaign.

Leiper's Road to City Hall

Leiper has been one of the more progressive voices on Ottawa City Council since first being elected to represent Kitchissippi in 2014. Known for his focus on cycling infrastructure, transit, and neighbourhood livability, it's perhaps fitting — if a little ironic — that his campaign hit a literal bump in the road via a scooter crash.

His mayoral run puts him among a growing field of candidates vying to lead Ottawa as the city navigates major challenges: an LRT system still regaining public trust, a tight housing market, and ongoing questions about the city's long-term growth strategy.

A Reminder About Micro-Mobility Safety

The crash is also a timely reminder for Ottawa residents about the risks of scooters, e-bikes, and other micro-mobility options — especially as warmer weather brings more two-wheeled commuters onto city streets and pathways.

Ottawa's cycling and scooter infrastructure has improved significantly in recent years, but riders still face real hazards: uneven pavement, car door zones, and intersections that weren't designed with smaller vehicles in mind. Wearing a helmet and staying visible remain the most effective ways to stay safe.

Leiper himself has been a vocal advocate for safer streets in Ottawa, making the crash a pointed moment for the city's ongoing conversation about how it prioritizes different modes of transportation.

Campaign Carries On

For now, Leiper's team is keeping things light — acknowledging the crash with candour while making clear their candidate isn't slowing down. A few bruises won't derail a mayoral bid, it seems.

Ottawa voters will be watching closely as the race develops in the months ahead.
