What Is Distraction Theft?
Ottawa police are warning residents after investigating distraction theft cases in the Alta Vista neighbourhood. This type of crime occurs when thieves work in teams to intentionally distract victims—usually through conversation, a staged argument, or a physical "bump"—while accomplices steal wallets, phones, jewelry, or other valuables.
Distraction theft is particularly common in busy public spaces like shopping areas, transit stations, and neighbourhood streets where foot traffic is heavy. Victims often don't realize they've been robbed until hours later, making it hard to identify the culprits.
How Distraction Theft Works
Thieves typically use several tactics. One common method involves someone striking up a friendly conversation—asking for directions, complimenting your appearance, or pretending to recognize you. While you're engaged, an accomplice picks your pocket or opens your bag. Other techniques include staging a fake argument nearby to grab your attention, spilling something on you to create chaos, or "accidentally" bumping into you in a crowd.
Protecting Yourself in Ottawa
Ottawa residents can reduce their risk of becoming victims by following these safety tips:
Be aware of your surroundings. Stay alert in public spaces, especially when shopping or using transit. Avoid getting lost in your phone or earbuds, which make you an easy target.
Secure your belongings. Keep valuables out of sight. Use bags with secure closures, keep wallets in front pockets, and don't leave phones or purses unattended on tables or seats.
Trust your instincts. If something feels off about an interaction—an overly friendly stranger, an unnecessary bump, or sudden commotion—move away from the situation.
