Fatal ATV Crash Claims Life in Ottawa's Dunrobin Community

Ottawa police are appealing to the public for help after a fatal ATV crash in the city's rural west end left one person dead Monday evening.

The collision occurred at approximately 5:10 p.m. on Monday when an all-terrain vehicle crashed on private property in the 1700 block of Dunrobin Road in Dunrobin — a small rural community located in Ottawa's west end, near the Ottawa River.

What We Know So Far

Ottawa Police Service confirmed the crash took place on private land, and investigators are now reaching out to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information that could help piece together the circumstances leading up to it.

Few details have been released publicly at this stage, as is typical in the early stages of a fatal collision investigation. Police have not yet confirmed the identity or age of the victim, pending notification of next of kin.

Dunrobin: A Rural Corner of Ottawa

Dunrobin sits along the Ottawa River in the western reaches of the city, a part of Ottawa that many residents in the urban core rarely visit. The area is characterized by large rural properties, hobby farms, and open land — terrain where ATV use is common, both recreationally and for property maintenance.

While ATV riding on private land is legal in Ontario, crashes on rural properties can be particularly dangerous given the distance from emergency services and the rugged nature of the terrain.

ATV Safety in Ontario

Fatal ATV crashes are a recurring concern across Ontario, particularly in rural and semi-rural communities. According to provincial safety advocates, rollovers and loss-of-control incidents are among the leading causes of ATV fatalities — and many involve riders not wearing helmets or other protective gear.

Ontario law requires ATV operators on public land to wear an approved helmet, but regulations on private property can vary. Safety organizations consistently urge riders to wear full protective gear regardless of where they're riding, and to never operate an ATV alone in remote areas.
