Ottawa Fire Services Is Coming to You This June

Ottawa residents can expect a knock at the door this month — and it's a welcome one. Ottawa Fire Services is running a special community outreach program every Sunday in June, sending firefighters directly to homes across the city to inspect smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.

The initiative is part of a broader push to make sure Ottawa households are properly protected before a fire or CO emergency strikes. It's free, it's quick, and it could genuinely save your life.

What Happens During the Visit?

When Ottawa firefighters come to your door, they'll check that your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are present, functioning, and correctly placed. If your detectors are outdated, improperly located, or missing batteries, they'll let you know — and in some cases, may provide replacements.

The visits are entirely voluntary. You're under no obligation to let firefighters in, but the service is being offered as a free public safety resource, and fire officials are encouraging residents to take advantage of it.

Why This Matters

Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are the single most effective tools for early warning in a home fire or CO leak — but they only work if they're functioning properly. Dead batteries, alarms that are past their expiry date (most detectors have a 10-year lifespan), or units placed too far from bedrooms can all reduce their effectiveness dramatically.

Carbon monoxide, often called the "silent killer," is colourless and odourless, making a working detector especially critical. In Ottawa's colder months, CO incidents from heating systems and attached garages are a real risk — but summer isn't exempt, particularly with gas appliances in use.

When and Where Are Firefighters Visiting?

The Sunday visits are taking place throughout June 2025. Ottawa Fire Services hasn't released a block-by-block schedule publicly, so residents shouldn't wait for a knock — if you're unsure about the state of your alarms, now is a great time to check them yourself or call your local fire station for guidance.

If you miss the Sunday visits, Ottawa Fire Services also offers home safety visits by appointment year-round. You can request one through the City of Ottawa's website.

Quick Checklist: Is Your Home Protected?

While you wait for (or welcome) a visit, here's what to verify:

  • Smoke alarms should be on every level of your home, inside each bedroom, and outside sleeping areas
  • Carbon monoxide detectors are required near sleeping areas and on every level
  • Test your alarms monthly by pressing the test button
  • Replace batteries at least once a year — or go with a 10-year sealed battery unit
  • Check the manufacture date on the back of each unit; replace anything older than 10 years

A Small Ask With a Big Payoff

This kind of door-to-door outreach is exactly the sort of proactive community safety work that makes a real difference. Ottawa firefighters are giving up their Sundays to make sure your family is protected — answering the door takes about five minutes and could be one of the most important things you do this month.
