Ottawa Firefighters Stretched Thin During Ice Storm
Ottawa firefighters spent Wednesday morning responding to an unusually high volume of calls as freezing rain transformed roads into skating rinks and strong winds toppled hydro lines across the region.
Ottawa Fire Services posted a public warning asking residents to slow down, noting crews were simultaneously handling multiple motor vehicle collisions and calls about downed power lines.
Downed Hydro Lines - What to Do
If you encounter a downed hydro line during or after an Ottawa ice storm:
- Always assume the line is live
- Stay at least 10 metres away from the line and anything it is touching
- Call 9-1-1 immediately
- If a line falls on your vehicle, stay inside and call 9-1-1
- If you must exit due to fire, jump clear with both feet together and shuffle away
Driving in Ottawa Ice
Freezing rain creates particularly treacherous driving conditions because the ice is often invisible until you are already sliding. Reduce speed significantly, leave more following distance, and avoid sharp braking or steering. If you can stay home during active freezing rain, do - it helps first responders get to people who genuinely need help.
