Freezing Rain Warning for Ottawa and Surrounding Areas
Freezing rain, which coats surfaces in a layer of ice almost instantly upon contact, is significantly more dangerous than regular snowfall. Roads become like skating rinks, trees and power lines buckle under the weight of ice, and even a short walk to the car can result in a nasty fall.
The forecast calls for multiple rounds of freezing precipitation, potentially lasting several hours at a stretch. Ottawa's latitude and proximity to the Ottawa Valley creates conditions where warm air can ride over cold surface air, producing exactly this type of freezing rain scenario.
How to Stay Safe on Ottawa Streets
The City of Ottawa's roads crews will be out in force, but even freshly treated roads can refreeze quickly during active freezing rain. Residents are strongly advised to:
