What Makes Freezing Rain So Dangerous
Unlike snow, which piles up visibly, freezing rain is sneaky. It falls as liquid and freezes on contact with cold surfaces: roads, sidewalks, stairs, tree branches, and power lines. The result is a nearly invisible glaze of ice that can be impossible to detect until you are already on your way down.
A significant Ottawa freezing rain event can accumulate 10-20 millimetres of ice on exposed surfaces. At that level, branches snap, power lines fail, and even confident drivers lose traction.
Power Outages Are a Real Risk
Ottawa saw widespread power outages during the April 2023 ice storm, with some neighbourhoods going without electricity for over 24 hours. During any Ottawa freezing rain warning, charge your devices and have flashlights and extra layers accessible.
How to Move Around Safely
If you must go outside:
- Wear boots with grip - sneakers have almost no traction on ice
- Walk slowly with short steps; shuffle if you have to
- Hold every railing on every staircase
- Give yourself more time - rushing on ice is how people fall
- Stay away from trees, as ice-coated branches can fall without warning
