Ottawa's culinary community has been buzzing this week as celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay appears to be on a very unofficial tour of Toronto's restaurant scene, and it's raising eyebrows, laughs, and a whole lot of questions about whether it's really him.
The Sightings That Started It All
The most credible spotting happened on March 13, when Toronto chef David Schwartz shared a mirror selfie alongside a man who very much looks like the famously blunt Michelin-starred chef at his acclaimed Ossington steakhouse, Linny's. Schwartz captioned the post with a casual "had some legends come through over the past week," and the internet promptly lost its mind.
That appearance, at least, had a concrete explanation: Ramsay joined the Linny's team for a promotional dinner in partnership with Canadian cookware brand HexClad. Nothing too mysterious there, unless you count the suspicious absence of anyone being called an idiot sandwich.
Real or Doppelgänger?
Things get murkier with his other alleged Toronto appearances. A West Queen West café called The Roasted Nut shared a selfie in early February with someone who bears a very convincing resemblance to Ramsay, claiming he dropped by for a coffee. When Dished Toronto reported the sighting on Instagram, followers were split, some convinced it was the real deal, others certain it was an uncannily good lookalike.
The debate took on a life of its own. Toronto residents began cataloguing each sighting, debating photo angles, jawlines, and whether the real Gordon Ramsay would actually just quietly pop into a café without a camera crew in tow. (Short answer: probably not.)
Why Ottawa Should Be Paying Attention
So why does any of this matter to us here in Ottawa? For one, it's a reminder of just how rich and exciting Canada's restaurant scene has become, and Ottawa is very much part of that story. Our city has quietly developed a dining culture that rivals any major Canadian market, from the James Beard-adjacent talent cooking in Hintonburg to the explosion of independent spots along Wellington West and Bank Street.
If Ramsay, real or otherwise, is making rounds through the country, Ottawa's restaurant scene is more than worthy of a visit. Chefs like Marc Lepine at Atelier, the team at Fauna, and dozens of newer spots have been quietly earning national recognition for years. We'd love to see what a certain British chef with a temper would make of a proper Ottawa poutine or a tasting menu at one of our best fine-dining rooms.
The Verdict
Is the Gordon Ramsay currently haunting Toronto's restaurant patios the genuine article? Probably yes, at least some of the time, the Linny's partnership is documented and real. The organic café drop-ins? Your guess is as good as ours.
