Ottawa drivers on westbound Highway 417 faced an unexpected disruption after a collision forced the closure of the busy corridor near Bronson Avenue.

The incident temporarily blocked westbound lanes on the 417 — the main east-west artery running through the heart of the capital — before crews were able to clear the scene and reopen the highway to traffic.

Ottawa's Busiest Highway

Hwy. 417, also known as the Queensway, is the lifeline of Ottawa's road network, carrying tens of thousands of vehicles daily through the city. Any closure — even a short one — can trigger significant ripple effects across surrounding streets, with drivers quickly spilling onto alternatives like Scott Street, Wellington Street, and Albert Street.

The Bronson Avenue interchange is a particularly high-traffic section of the 417, sitting near Centretown and the Glebe and serving as a key off-ramp for commuters heading into downtown Ottawa or south toward Old Ottawa South.

What to Expect During Incidents

When collisions close lanes on the 417, Ottawa traffic typically backs up quickly in both directions as rubbernecking and lane merges slow the flow. The City of Ottawa and the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) work alongside OPP and Ottawa Police Service to clear incidents as efficiently as possible.

Drivers are encouraged to check real-time traffic conditions through resources like Ottawa Traffic or the MTO's 511 Ontario app before heading out, especially during peak commuting hours when a single incident can add significant time to a trip.

Staying Safe on the 417

Ottawa's highway network sees its share of collisions year-round, but incidents tend to spike during winter months when ice and reduced visibility create hazardous driving conditions. Emergency responders routinely remind motorists to slow down when passing collision scenes and to move over for stopped emergency vehicles — a legal requirement under Ontario's Move Over law.

If you're travelling through Ottawa and encounter a lane closure, the safest move is to follow police direction, avoid sudden lane changes, and keep a safe following distance.

The 417 has since fully reopened and traffic has returned to normal.
