Is the Glebe a good neighbourhood?

The Glebe is one of Ottawa's most sought-after and well-established neighbourhoods — and for good reason. Located south of downtown along Bank Street, it combines walkable urban charm with architecturally beautiful streets, Lansdowne Park, the Rideau Canal, and some of the best independent dining and shopping in the city. If you can afford it, the Glebe is hard to beat.

What Makes the Glebe Special

Bank Street is the Glebe's main artery — a real, old-fashioned main street with independent bookstores (Perfect Books), neighbourhood pubs, cafés (and the famous Kettleman's Bagels nearby), clothing boutiques, and restaurants. It's the kind of street that cities elsewhere try to recreate artificially. Here it just evolved over generations.

Lansdowne Park anchors the south end of the Glebe, housing TD Place arena (home of the Ottawa Redblacks and Fury FC), the Ottawa Farmers' Market (Sundays, May–November), restaurants, and year-round events. It transformed the neighbourhood into one of Ottawa's premier entertainment districts.

The Rideau Canal borders the Glebe on its west side, offering the Canal Pathway for cycling, running, and in winter, skating on the world's largest naturally frozen skating rink.

Housing in the Glebe

The Glebe features a mix of Victorian and Edwardian row houses, semi-detached homes, and low-rise condos. It's one of Ottawa's most architecturally consistent and charming neighbourhoods. That character comes at a cost: detached homes typically list from $800,000 to over $1.3M. Condos around Lansdowne start around $450,000–$700,000.

Inventory is tight. Glebe properties move quickly when they come to market.

Who Lives in the Glebe

The Glebe attracts a mix of established professionals, families with older children, and empty-nesters who want to downsize without leaving urban life behind. It's also popular with people who work at Carleton University or in the nearby medical district (Ottawa General, CHEO).

Any Drawbacks?

Price is the biggest barrier. The Glebe is one of Ottawa's most expensive neighbourhoods on a per-square-foot basis. Transit is good (multiple bus routes on Bank) but there's no LRT station directly in the Glebe — the closest stops are at Rideau and Lyon on Line 1. Parking can be tight on event nights at Lansdowne.
