Ottawa commuters are facing another round of frustration on Line 1 of the O-Train this week, after overhead wire issues triggered repairs that OC Transpo warned could drag on through Thursday.
The problem: once again involving the overhead catenary system that powers the light rail trains, brought service disruptions that forced transit officials to deploy replacement bus bridges along the line. For Ottawans who rely on the LRT to get to work, school, or appointments, the disruption is all too familiar.
What Happened
According to OC Transpo, technicians identified damage to overhead wires on Line 1, requiring crews to carry out repairs before normal service could be fully restored. The issue surfaced during regular operations and caused significant service interruptions during what are typically some of the busiest commuting periods of the day.
Ottawa's LRT has been a lightning rod for frustration since Stage 1 launched in 2019, with overhead wire failures, wheel issues, and software glitches contributing to a string of shutdowns over the years. A major inquiry into the system's troubled early years resulted in dozens of recommendations, and the city has been working to address systemic problems.
