Ottawa's Line 1 light rail line is back in service after a chunk of the route in the middle of the line was shut down due to reported damage on the overhead wires that power the trains.
What happened
OC Transpo closed the affected stretch of Line 1 after crews identified damage to the overhead catenary system, the network of wires that supplies electricity to the light rail vehicles as they run. Any interruption to that system forces trains to stop running on the affected segment until crews can inspect and repair the damage, since LRT trains can't operate without power from the wires above them.
The timing stung for a lot of commuters. The closure landed on the first weekday of a newly revamped Line 1 schedule, meaning riders who were still getting used to updated timings found themselves dealing with a disruption before the new schedule even had a chance to settle in.
The Ottawa angle
Line 1 is the backbone of Ottawa's light rail network, running through downtown and connecting communities from the east end through to the west.
