Ottawa Police Make Arrest in Replica Firearm Incident

Ottawa police made an arrest in the early hours of Thursday morning after officers were called to the Sunnyside neighbourhood over reports involving replica firearms.

Officers responded to the area of Sunnyside Avenue and Carraway Private at approximately 12:30 a.m. A man was subsequently taken into custody and charged with possession of replica firearms.

What Are Replica Firearm Charges?

Under Canadian law, replica firearms — objects designed to look like real guns but incapable of firing — are tightly regulated. Possessing a replica firearm is a criminal offence in Canada. Unlike real firearms, replicas cannot be registered or licensed, meaning their possession is prohibited outright under the Criminal Code.

Police treat calls involving replica firearms with the same level of urgency as real ones. Officers have no way of immediately distinguishing a replica from a functioning weapon during a live call, which means response protocols mirror those used in any firearms incident.

The Sunnyside Neighbourhood

The incident took place in the Sunnyside area of Ottawa, a residential neighbourhood in the city's Old Ottawa South district, located near the Rideau Canal. The area is generally quiet and family-oriented, making a late-night call of this nature notable for local residents.

Ottawa police have not released the name of the individual charged, which is standard practice pending a court appearance. No injuries were reported in connection with the incident.

A Broader Reminder

The arrest is a reminder that replica and imitation firearms carry serious legal consequences in Canada. Anyone in Ottawa found in possession of a replica firearm — even if they believe it to be a toy or prop — can face criminal charges.

Residents who spot someone with what appears to be a firearm are encouraged to call 911 immediately and avoid approaching the individual. Ottawa Police Service can also be reached non-emergently at 613-236-1222.
