Ottawa has no shortage of ways to celebrate Canada Day, but this year the National Capital Commission quietly added one of the most memorable options yet: a floating swimming dock on the Ottawa River with an unobstructed view of Parliament Hill.
For one local writer spending their very first Canada Day in the capital, the East Wharf dock turned out to be the perfect introduction to what makes Ottawa special — equal parts civic pride and genuine summer fun.
What Is the East Wharf Dock?
The East Wharf is one of the NCC's new public swimming platforms installed along the Ottawa River shoreline this season. It's a proper floating dock with ladder access into the river, meaning you can actually swim — not just wade — in one of Canada's most iconic waterways. The location places you directly below the Hill, so the Peace Tower and the Centre Block's green copper roofline loom large while you float on your back.
It's the kind of only-in-Ottawa experience that residents have been quietly hoping for, as the NCC has been working in recent years to reconnect the public with the riverfront.
Canada Day at the Dock
Arriving on July 1st, the dock was already drawing a crowd — families with kids, tourists snapping photos, and locals who clearly knew what they were doing. The atmosphere was festive without being overwhelming, a nice contrast to the packed festival grounds further up the Hill.
The water was cool and clean, and the view really does live up to the hype. Floating in the Ottawa River with Parliament reflected in the surface around you is the kind of moment that makes you genuinely appreciate living in this city — or visiting it for the first time.
Getting There
The East Wharf dock is accessible from the riverfront pathways along Ottawa's downtown core. It's an easy walk or bike ride from the ByWard Market or the Hill itself, making it a natural add-on to any Canada Day itinerary. The NCC has been expanding its riverfront programming as part of its broader effort to make the waterfront more usable for everyday Ottawans.
No admission fee, no reservations — just show up and jump in.
Worth Adding to Your Summer List
Even outside of Canada Day, the East Wharf dock is shaping up to be one of Ottawa's best warm-weather spots. Few cities can offer a swim with that kind of backdrop, and the NCC deserves credit for making it happen.
If you haven't made it down yet, put it on the list before summer slips away.
