O-Train Line 1 Knocked Out by Ice Storm
Ottawa commuters faced a disrupted Wednesday afternoon when OC Transpo announced a partial suspension of O-Train Line 1 service after freezing rain damaged overhead power infrastructure along the route.
The disruption began shortly after 12:30 p.m. when staff reported electrical arcing on trains travelling between Hurdman and Lees stations. Video captured by a local resident showed sparks flying from the pantograph before it separated from the catenary system entirely.
What Happened
OC Transpo officials attributed the damage to ice accumulation on the overhead catenary system. When ice builds up on the wires, the added weight and reduced conductivity can cause the pantograph to arc or detach, cutting power to the train and potentially damaging the wire itself.
Getting Around
OC Transpo put replacement R1 buses in service between Rideau and Blair stations while trains continued running between Tunney's Pasture and uOttawa on the unaffected western section of the line. Technicians worked to repair the damaged catenary, though OC Transpo warned the disruption could extend into Thursday morning.
Line 1 and Winter
