OC Transpo Trims Summer Schedule Amid Staffing Pressures
Ottawa commuters are in for a bumpier ride this summer, as OC Transpo has announced it will be scaling back service on select bus routes and on Line 4 of the O-Train network.
The transit agency says the cuts are a necessary step to get staffing levels and maintenance operations back on track. Like many transit systems across North America, OC Transpo has faced persistent challenges with driver shortages and an aging fleet that requires more upkeep than usual — pressures that have only compounded heading into the busier summer months.
Which Routes Are Affected?
OC Transpo has not yet published a full list of every affected route, but the agency confirmed that reductions will hit both surface bus service and the O-Train's Line 4, which runs between Bayview and Greenboro. Riders relying on these routes during peak hours could face longer wait times or the need to plan alternative connections.

Why Is This Happening?
OC Transpo has been dealing with a combination of factors that have strained the system. Recruiting and retaining bus operators has been an ongoing battle post-pandemic, with competition from other employers making it difficult to fill shifts. At the same time, maintenance backlogs — particularly on the O-Train network, which has had a troubled history since its expansion — mean that fewer vehicles are consistently available for service.
Rather than run reduced or unreliable service unpredictably, the agency says it's opting to proactively cut back and advertise those reductions clearly. The intent is to give riders accurate expectations rather than have them waiting for buses or trains that don't show up on schedule.
