Ottawa police made a striking discovery during a weekend stunt-driving crackdown — a converted party van rolling down Prince of Wales Drive, complete with a sofa and a dozen teen passengers packed into the cargo area.

Officers pulled over the van as part of targeted enforcement aimed at stunt driving and dangerous road behaviour. What they found inside was unusual even by those standards.

What Was Inside the Van

The driver turned out to be just 17 years old. In the cargo section behind them, police found 12 passengers, all aged 17 or 18. Some of those passengers were seated on a sofa that had been placed in the back of the vehicle — a makeshift mobile hangout that was apparently in motion on a public Ottawa road.

Cargo areas of vans are not designed for passengers. They lack seat belts, proper seating, structural protections, and any of the safety features that come standard in the passenger cabin. In a collision or even a hard stop, anyone riding unsecured in the back would have no protection.

Part of a Broader Crackdown

The stop was part of a weekend enforcement blitz targeting stunt driving and related dangerous behaviour on Ottawa roads. Stunt driving in Ontario includes a range of offences beyond just racing — excessive speed, performing tricks, and driving in a way that puts others at risk can all qualify under the Highway Traffic Act.

Penalties for stunt driving in Ontario are serious and have gotten tougher in recent years. First-time offenders face immediate licence suspension, vehicle impoundment, fines, and potential jail time. For a 17-year-old driver, the consequences extend to their graduated licence status and could affect their driving record for years.

A Reminder About Road Safety

This incident is an uncomfortable reminder that dangerous driving isn't always about speed or racing. A van full of teenagers, some perched on furniture, moving through Ottawa's streets on a weekend night represents a serious risk — not just to the occupants, but to every other driver and pedestrian sharing the road.

Prince of Wales Drive is a busy arterial road in Ottawa's south end, connecting the Glebe and Old Ottawa South areas to Barrhaven and Riverside South. It sees significant traffic volume, particularly on weekends.

Ottawa police have not yet released details on charges laid, but the incident is likely to result in multiple counts given the number of passengers and the age of the driver.

What Parents and Teens Should Know

If you're a teen (or the parent of one), this is worth paying attention to. Riding unsecured in a cargo area is illegal in Ontario. The driver of a vehicle is responsible for ensuring all passengers under 16 are properly buckled — and while the passengers here were 17 and 18, the overall setup raises serious legal and safety questions for everyone involved.

Police are urging anyone who witnesses stunt driving or dangerous behaviour on Ottawa roads to report it immediately.
