Ottawa police are turning to the public for help after a suspected robbery at Bayshore Shopping Centre left investigators searching for answers — and a face to put to the crime.
The incident allegedly occurred on March 23 at the popular west-end mall, when a suspect made off with jewelry from one of the retail stores inside. Police have not yet identified the individual responsible and are appealing to anyone with information to come forward.
What Happened at Bayshore
According to Ottawa Police Service, the suspect entered the Bayshore Shopping Centre — located on the western edge of Ottawa near the Bayshore OC Transpo terminal — and allegedly stole jewelry before fleeing the scene. Investigators have not released details about the specific store targeted or the estimated value of the stolen items.
The theft took place in late March, and it has taken investigators several days to go public with the appeal, suggesting the suspect has not been identified through other means such as store surveillance alone.
Police Asking for Public Help
The Ottawa Police Service's major crime unit is now asking anyone who was at Bayshore Shopping Centre on March 23 — or who may have seen something unusual — to contact investigators. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
This kind of public appeal is common when surveillance footage exists but doesn't clearly capture a suspect's identity, or when police believe someone in the community may recognize the individual involved.
Bayshore and Retail Crime in Ottawa
Bayshore Shopping Centre is one of Ottawa's busiest retail hubs, drawing shoppers from Nepean, Kanata, and surrounding neighbourhoods. Retail theft and robbery incidents at shopping centres are a persistent concern for Ottawa police, particularly as foot traffic increases during busy seasons.
The Ottawa Police Service has been increasingly vocal in recent years about using public tip lines and social media to help solve crimes where physical evidence alone isn't enough. Community awareness campaigns have helped crack several cases in the city.
