Ottawa sits at the crossroads of some of Eastern Canada's best road trip routes, making it one of the most convenient cities to rent a car and explore. Whether you're heading up to Gatineau Park, cruising the Thousand Islands Parkway, or making the trek to Algonquin Provincial Park, the rental car you choose will define the whole experience.
Most people default to the cheapest option on the lot and regret it somewhere around Brockville. Here's a smarter approach.
Match the Car to the Trip
Before you even open a booking site, think about what the trip actually demands.
- City driving around Ottawa? A compact or economy car is your best friend. Parking downtown on Elgin or in the Glebe is tight, and smaller cars are easier to squeeze into metered spots.
- Heading into the Gatineau Hills or Algonquin? Consider an SUV or crossover with decent ground clearance. Gravel access roads and shoulder-season mud can catch a sedan off guard.
- Family trip to Upper Canada Village or Kingston? A mid-size SUV or minivan gives you the cargo room you'll actually need once you factor in luggage, snacks, and the kids' gear.
Fuel Economy Still Matters
Gas prices in Ontario can swing significantly, especially outside the city where competition between stations drops off. A hybrid or fuel-efficient compact can save you a meaningful amount on a multi-day drive through the Ottawa Valley or along Highway 7.

Don't Skip the Insurance Review
Rental counters are well-practiced at selling collision damage waivers, and the upsell pressure is real. Ottawa's peak tourism season — Tulip Festival in May through Canada Day in July — drains rental fleets fast.
