The PM's Home Has a Problem
Ottawa has been at the centre of a long-running debate about where Canada's prime minister should live, and a newly surfaced internal memo is turning up the heat. According to a government document obtained by CBC News, Rideau Cottage, the historic red-brick home on the grounds of Rideau Hall where PMs have been staying for over a decade, is officially considered "inadequate" for the job.
PM Mark Carney currently calls Rideau Cottage home, just as Justin Trudeau did before him. But behind the scenes, officials have flagged serious concerns about the property's suitability.
What the Memo Says
The internal memo, dated August 8, 2025, is blunt: Rideau Cottage's "small footprint and lack of adequate functional space make it inadequate for a prime minister's needs." It also notes that the residence's proximity to the Governor General's home and a surrounding residential neighbourhood creates heightened security risks.
In short: it's too cramped, and it's too exposed.
24 Sussex: Still a Mess
So what about 24 Sussex Drive, the official residence that's sat largely empty since Stephen Harper left office? The short answer: it's been gutted. Workers have removed asbestos, mould, dead rodents, and entirely obsolete mechanical, heating, and electrical systems. The National Capital Commission manages the property, and it remains far from move-in ready.
Former PM Trudeau set a January 1, 2026 deadline for forming an advisory panel of former prime ministers to weigh in on location, functionality, cost, and security requirements. Whether that panel was ever formed remains unclear, the current Carney government has not confirmed it.
What the government has said is that it's taking "a more active role in helping advance the file" and is working to cost out options. A decision on 24 Sussex's fate could come within months.
Ottawa Watches and Waits
For Ottawa residents, this is a story that's been simmering for years. The capital city is home to these storied properties, and the question of what happens next has real implications, for heritage, security, and the symbolic weight of Canada's most famous address.
Whether 24 Sussex gets a multi-million-dollar renovation, is repurposed entirely, or is replaced by something new, Ottawa will be watching closely.
