Ottawa Is Getting More Places to Take a Dip This Summer

Ottawa residents have two new reasons to head down to the waterfront this summer. The National Capital Commission (NCC) is adding a pair of swimming docks to the Ottawa River in the downtown core — one on the Ottawa side near the Ottawa Locks, and another across the river on the Gatineau shoreline behind the Canadian Museum of History.

The announcement is great news for anyone who's wanted more accessible ways to enjoy the river that divides Ontario and Quebec right in the heart of the National Capital Region.

Where Exactly Are the New Docks?

The two new platforms will be strategically placed in some of the most scenic spots along the Ottawa-Gatineau waterfront:

  • Ottawa Locks dock: Situated near the historic Rideau Canal locks where they meet the Ottawa River, this location puts swimmers right alongside one of the city's most iconic landmarks.
  • Canadian Museum of History dock: Located on the Quebec side of the river, this dock will give Gatineau beachgoers — and Ottawa visitors who make the short trip across — a stunning view of Parliament Hill while they swim.

Both locations are easily accessible by foot, bike, or transit, making them a natural fit for spontaneous summer dips after work or on weekends.

Why This Matters for Ottawa Summers

Access to the Ottawa River for swimming has expanded in recent years as water quality has improved and the NCC has invested in waterfront programming. These new docks add to an already growing network of swimming spots along the river, making it easier for Ottawans to cool off without needing a car or a long drive out of the city.

For downtown residents especially — many of whom don't have easy access to backyard pools — having a swim dock a short walk or bike ride away is a genuine quality-of-life upgrade. The NCC has been working to reconnect the public with the Ottawa River, and this is a tangible step in that direction.

What to Expect at the Docks

Swimming docks typically provide a stable platform to jump or lower yourself into the water, along with a ladder for getting back out — making river swimming safer and more approachable for people of all abilities. They're also just a lot of fun.

The NCC has not yet confirmed the exact opening dates for the new docks, but they're expected to be in place for the 2026 swim season. Keep an eye on the NCC's website and social channels for updates as the weather warms up.

Plan Your Visit

If you're looking to make a day of it, both locations pair well with the surrounding area. The Ottawa Locks dock is steps from Major's Hill Park and the ByWard Market, while the Gatineau dock sits near Jacques-Cartier Park — perfect for a picnic before or after your swim.

Whether you're a seasoned river swimmer or just curious about dipping your toes in for the first time, this summer is shaping up to be a great one for Ottawa waterfront life.
